It was used in some nice electronic music!

I'm surprised that no one mentioned quaul – https://qaul.net/

It seems very nice.

Why is this link flagged? It's an important discussion in the FOSS community and doesn't break any guideline...

I came to see if this was posted on HN, found that it was flagged. What's going on?

I can't recommend Jellyfin enough. It works remarkably well!

https://jellyfin.org

Jellyfin is an amazing and underappreciated project. I've run it for a year or so and it's great.

I use (and recommend) the Kodi addon as the client. I had stability issues with the jellyfin Android (TV) app, but Kodi runs on all sorts of platforms and it's very well supported. I use it for music, too (there's a dedicated music player for it in f-droid called "gelli.")

What's the difference between this and Plex?

Jellyfin is free and open source software for one. I don't know the exact difference in the feature set but I have heard people complaining that Plex is focusing more on surveiling it's users to push ads. I just got Jellyfin working with linuxserver.io docker image on my rpi4 and it is pretty nice.

Adding a random Jellyfin anecdote: Jellyfin stable (10.6.2) is buggy and somewhat unusable for me — videos wouldn't play because of some browser compatibility issue.

This seems to have been fixed in the 10.7.0 RCs, and they've been quite wonderful.

The only feature I find lacking is being able to use Jellyfin on a Chromecast, via their iOS app. It seems to be blocked by the lack of upstream SDK support: https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-expo/issues/16

You have to pay for hardware transcoding with plex. Plex (and also Emby for that matter) have more client apps and platforms supported than Jellyfin though, so you might want to check that before settling for one.

Jellyfin is fully open-source and doesn't require any third party authentication. It's not quite feature complete versus Plex but it is very close, and has never been a issue for me or my users.

> the 50th time we've had to do something bad and ugly to fit into what is supported by OCaml

Can you tell us a bit more about those cases? I've been writing front-end stuff using BuckleScript (and the OCaml syntax, which I for once really like!) for 6 months, and I haven't (yet?) stumbled upon those kind of pain points, I'm definitely curious!

Not the OP, but my biggest issues have been around tooling.

Oh that's stupid! We (non racist people) know that black people are black and white people are white (biological differences), we just don't think it's in any way a reason to treat them differently. (same thing with men and women ;)

[flagged]

Being for or against affirmative action and quotas is kind of orthogonal to being a racist, though? There are certainly racists who support affirmative action, and obviously ones who don't. (for instance, people who think that there is a difference in mean IQ between races, but thinks that affirmative action to compensate would increase societal stability) Similarly, there are people who believe all racial differences are skin deep / stop at the neck who support affirmative action and ones who do not. (For instance, people who think that affirmative action is counterproductive and will lead to racism)

There might be a correlation there, but let's not pretend that only two corners of that matrix are populated.

I'm not an advocacy for affirmative action and quotas, but I think they were made to "counteract" social discrimination based on race and sex, and not race and sex differences themselves. I think I might say that in an imaginary society without racism and sexism, I would be against affirmative action and quotas! (well there wouldn't be need for them...)

> we just don't think it's in any way a reason to treat them differently

This is blatantly false. At least different skin color can lead to different treatment in face makeup and portrait photography. Not to mention all sorts of different needs from men and women. Your belief of biological differences should have no impact on social implication cannot be more wrong.
