Ask HN: What are the things you haven't accomplished for 2024?

With only a month and a half left in 2024, take a moment to review your annual plan and identify what’s still incomplete. Let’s work on finishing them!

As for me:

1. Fitness progress hasn’t been great.

2. Haven’t met my reading target for books.

Keep going!!

Getting a new job - changing priorities, difficult market, losing motivation to keep searching.

Did well on health goals though.

Me too

1. Changing careers - though I’m still steadily working towards the new chosen career path by completing all the academic/study requirements, but I’m increasingly ready to throw in the towel with the old career, but now is not quite the right time, just gotta hang in there for another year or so.

1. Same with fitness. Need to start up again, remembering that something is better than nothing.

2. Need a hard deadline to finish writing my book. It's dragged on too long. I can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

3. Need to make sure to stay consistent with studying Chinese. It's easy to slip.

4. Cut back on drinking.

Launching my side project. At least I got in better shape (and I'm happier for that than launching a side project)

I don't necessarily like to focus on what I didn't do and I wanted to, but:

  - get fit (did lose 10kg of 15 tho)
  - complete the first draft of my debut novel

Learning to swim : turns out its difficult to find an instructor if youre over the age of 10. I desperately want to learn so I can paddleboard and kayak with my partner.

For me its just work work 50-60 hours. I want to get healthy spend more time with my family and on hobbies. Alas i cannot. Hopefully in 2025.

What hours are you doing now and (if you want to answer) why so many?

I haven't made a BitGrid ASIC, Compiler, debugger, nor characterized it's efficiency.

Haven't started using Genode as my daily driver.

I have not finished rewriting my Python `learning CMS' in Go.

But that's OK, I'm on the way to learning Go.

Still want to make something with an rpi and 3d printer. There is time!

Still haven't made my first thousand dollars.

But you will

Amen

Haven't finished my side projects. Have a bunch of things in progress (apps, games, videos, etc) that I expected would be done by the end of the year (or close to done), but which are still far from the finish line.

Part of this is because of depression, part of this is because of the job searching grind, and part of this is because at least a few things I'm reliant on for these projects are being handled by someone else and they've only got so many hours in the day.

But yeah, they'll be done someday. Hopefully by the end of this year or the next.

Still haven't figured out what I truly love at age 40+. Guess it's a life long mission. Maybe that's what I truly love to do -- to figure out what I truly love to do.

How pathetic.

I haven't either, although I'm a little younger than you (about to turn 31), so deep down there's still hope I eventually will within some reasonable timeframe, while I'm still "young".

I wish you good luck. It's tough (because we cannot lie to ourselves).

Don't worry: what you truly love is a moving target as no one stays still. No 40 year old is like themselves at 30 or 20, or will be at 50.
