For those who haven't visited Japan, this is especially interesting because Japan has a strong bias away from digital and toward paper books (and cash, and other "physical goods") relative to comparably rich countries.


What is median size of municipality? If many of them are relatively small it is not that much surprise as bookstore needs certain number of people to support them.
