Khalid Sheldrake: The East Dulwich man who would be King (nationalarchives.gov.uk)

Muslims have been settled in the UK far longer than the likes of UKIP and the EDL would have you believe (and maybe even themselves realise), and some of the most visible were converts like Khalid Sheldrake. The most famous and I believe also earliest was Abdullah Qulliam, who also established the first mosque in Liverpool. The first purpose-built mosque was the Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking, and was a prominent enough landmark in Victorian London that it got a mention in H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, published in 1898. For anyone interested in reading more on the subject, Quilliam's biography by Ron Geaves - Islam in Victorian Britain - is the definitive book on the subject.
