I think it's nuanced. IDEs are great, but there's often a lack of good CLI tools and they often show their age. For example, I find checkstyle rather annoying to configure and use.


If you’re looking for alternatives, SonarQube has jumped quite far in the last few releases. I like the coherence of the platform now and i find the default gates aren’t oppressive like they were in days gone by.

I’ve gone all in on them these days, the feedback from sonarlint in the IDE is usually useful.


Last I checked, configuring stuff in SonarQube still involves fiddling with the UI instead of config files. And you need to host it somewhere.
