Bettercap – Swiss Army Knife for 802.11, BLE, IPv4 and IPv6 networks (github.com/bettercap)

The page about Bluetooth LE [1] shows a video [2] which is part of an article about hacking of a BT lock, but the link [3] is broken and doesn't work. It is readable in the web archive [4], but the archive has lots of broken images.

It's a shame that this content went away so fast... say what you want about the typical blogspot or medium blog, but at least they tend to last longer than some personal websites :-( Can we read that article elsewhere, has it been made available in other site and just not updated in the Youtube description?

Sounds interesting. So far I am mostly happy with Ethereal and mitmproxy. But maybe better stuff is out there? Experiences from users?

I was about to suggest Wireshark until I looked up Ethereal and discovered it was the former's original name.

Had no idea in the ~15 years I've been using it!!

Ah sorry, I was still half asleep when typing the comment. I wondered why typing Ethereal felt somehow strange. Right, it has been called Wireshark for a while...

Now I feel old

Bettercap is very different than Wireshark because it's specificaly built with attacks in mind and it's not just a generic packet sniffer.

In fact bettercap is a very obvious pun on the venerable ettercap, I suppose.

Let's not mention ettercap that much, it was built by people with very questionable behaviour(do a google search for Hacking Team company).

>Let's not mention ettercap that much, it was built by people with very questionable behaviour

I mean, how far are we gonna take this type of logic, considering the foundations of statistics (eg: Chi-squared distribution) were invented by eugenicists? :-)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Pearson#Politics_and_euge...

At least they open sourced the code so it can be used by good people as well -- it's better to remove the RCEs and leverage them against your enemies than to keep the knowledge esoteric so that only the privileged can attack.

What is this weird jump to politics, eugenics nazis or whatever? You're the second person that went there.

I just wanted people to know that ettercap is a tool written by people that can't be trusted when it comes to writing open source software.

Will you run any tools made public by NSO or any other company like that???

You said it was built by sketchy people but didn't explain what people were supposed to conclude from that (though you have since mentioned 'bugdoors.' So people projected their own guesses onto it, thinking your moral terms (bad people) were a clue to the mysterious hidden subtext.

You'd have been better off saying 'I don't trust ettercap, it was built by xxxx and seemingly innocuous code might exploit obscure vulnerabilities, backfiring severely on those who try to use it.'

> What is this weird jump to politics, eugenics nazis or whatever? You're the second person that went there.

Two thirds is a supermajority in most democracies, so you're the weird one.

>Will you run any tools made public by NSO or any other company like that???

Not only would I be ABSOLUTELY willing to use NSO's code (or anyone else's) to make a list, check it twice, then go out into the real world like the hit 1984 action film "Terminator" if I felt that was necessary to avert loss of innocent life and I felt that the local police, state police, federal bureau of investigation, and the national guard were all refusing to deal with the issue. (Though I'd do it from a VM so if they try to hack back, I can just roll back to a known good snapshot and save whatever they threw at me to possibly sell at a profit to fight another day.

The United States of America (where I'm posting from for now) is a two party presidential republic, not a multiparty parliamentary democracy, human rights are not "political", and the mother's menu for abusers in a post COVID world is to with the program, or get in the ground with Jeffrey Epstein.

There is no more "third way", and if you don't want some chicken fingers loving autist making comments _you_ are _choosing_ to _perceive_ as weird on Hacker News, be the change you want to see in the world and give said autist something better to do on a Saturday.

... That makes the code worse how?

I’m not going to stop using or talking about Jordan algebras, say, even though Pascual Jordan was a literal Nazi and a significant participant in the destruction of the centuries-old German mathematics and fundamental physics community (and the respective refugee-fueled rise of the American one). It bears mentioning, certainly, and subtracts from the scientific merit (among other things) of the person, but has nothing to do with the scientific merit of the notion.

>That makes the code worse how?

I don't trust the authors to have the best intentions anymore, I would assume there's "bugdoors" they know about.

A moot point anyway because ettercap has not been updated for years.

> "Pascual Jordan was a literal Nazi and a significant participant in the destruction of the centuries-old German mathematics and fundamental physics community (and the respective refugee-fueled rise of the American one)."

That's an oversimplified account of his role in the Nazi era.

The article you reference, while an interesting memoir read, does not contradict the statement you disagree with and quote above. Pascual Jordan was a literal Nazi. This is undisputed. His ideology preceded his joining of the Nazi party, which was not opportunistic at all, but deliberate. The article sheds little, if at all, light on the second part of the quoted statement.

I want to say that bettercap is at the core of the pwnagotchi

Funny name, interesting project

Definitely a pun on Ettercap[0].
