In the war on cars, the suburbs strike back (financialpost.com)

This is a trashy rant.

Has there ever been a single instance in the western hemisphere of improved mass transit and bike access actually hurting local businesses?

It's the "think of the children" equivalent for people who want to drive a lifted pick up truck to the grocery store and are emotionally attached to their ability to do so.

Garbage quality editorials like this are the reason I unsubscribed from several newspapers, including the Washington Post. If this is what their editors saw fit to put in the editorial section, I can't help but wonder what the effects of their other editorial decisions have been on the "less opinionated" content in the paper. It's hard to avoid the Gell-Mann amnesia effect, but I can at least try to avoid putting myself right into the middle of it. Intrusive advertisements and surveillance of customers at least can be excused by them desperately trying to make a profit; there's no excuse for this.

I know it’s only slightly relevant for this discussion, but I guess you meant to say “the Western world” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_world), large parts of which are in the Eastern Hemisphere (half of London and most of the European mainland are east of the Greenwich meridian)

"The federal government’s imperious National Capital Commission (NCC) seems to want to be the No Cars Commission, closing many of its parkways to vehicles on the flimsy excuse of encouraging outdoor exercise."

What actually happened is that Gatineau Park went over 50% bicycle only (cars only on weekend afternoons and Wednesdays) and the scenic parkways around town which are closed to commercial truck traffic anyway, but do serve as important weekday commuter arteries, are reserved for cyclists on weekends. And are very actively used in those times.

Flimsy excuse indeed.
