I always love reading Gopher (protocol) advocacy articles, not least because I run a gopherhole myself.
There are a lot of good reasons for gopher to stay alive, but 3 of the most important for me are; speed - no ads, just the file description and the content; somewhat under the radar - censorship engines tend not to descend down as low as port 70; the content - gopherholes tend to have the unusual, eclectic stuff that few others have...
In my case, I get a small but steady stream of gopher visitors, but thanks to a few nights playing with Perl anyone can now access most of the same content via a normal web browser: https://petergarner.net/gopherspace/index.php
Shouldn’t this read “Why should I care about Gemini”? As far as I recall Gopher is no longer maintained and doesn’t support TLS/encryption, but Gemini enforces encryption and is actively maintained.
