> Can a laptop from 2012 be a viable home server?

My take on this, the answer is yes, until a hardware part fails, and in 10 year old computers, they do.

Then it gets tricky: laptops, especially 10 year old laptops can be very hard to fix.

The ThinkPad T430 is quite repairable in that regard. I've replaced the screen in 20 minutes, replaced the CPU, all the SSD-s are easily accessible, and there's plenty of spare parts out there due to the fact that it's a model that was once popular and bought in bulk by many businesses.

But yes, some models probably don't have the same level of second-hand parts market, making repair difficult.

The disk you can usually replace.

Otherwise just restore the backup to a 5 year old laptop.

If you laptop server can run for 5 or 10 years, there is a good chance that during that time, you spilled coffee in the keyboard of another laptop, making it a good candidate for the new server.

I have a 12 year old laptop, that has been a server for 8 years.
