Depends on what you think the purpose of a professor is. If they're to teach, there's no time to do significant research. If they're to do significant research, there's no time to teach. And who will pay for replication - you can't publish it and students/p-docs can't get credit for it. And they want to get credit...

You may not be familiar with competitive US research institutions, but many prominent researchers are expected to teach. At some schools, the entire teaching staff is composed of researchers (who don't give a shit about teaching) and graduate students (who likely don't give a shit about teaching). The actual instruction at a lot of top-tier research institutions is terrible.


That was my point - the researchers “teach”. Went to two major unis and know all about this. Paid my way as a ta.
