Apple’s iMessage is a failure Within the US, with a modest amount of pre-pandemic international travel, WhatsApp was a thing I was aware of, but never had cause to use (or even install). I'm not certain I've even read the name since the pandemic started before today. Everyone I know uses some other platform, or just SMS because it works.

SMS doesn't work very well when you're not in the same country/region, as international SMS is not free/unlimited for most people.
