Don't Look Up meant to be condescending. It is more of a frustrated sigh than a sophisticated commentary. It's not the greatest comedy or drama there ever was, but it's portrayal of the zeitgeist is spot on, if uncomfortable. No wonder it struck a chord.
The new Matrix is a creatively bankrupt demake of the original. It's somehow worst than Revolutions which is a collection of CGI battles and not much else.
If it's goal was to sound condescending, then it was achieved. But I believe it's counterproductive to spend (what I can only assume to be in the region of $100 million) to be condescending towards your audience for 2 hours. Maybe it wasn't my kind of movie to begin with, but interesting point nonetheless.
Fully agree with your point on Matrix. It's seriously unfortunate to see it reduced to this...
I think Don't Look Up has the cult classic potential, it did a great job conveying the helplessness and ridiculousness of the situation. I felt every bit of it, but then again I do often feel like being chained to a sinking ship with a bunch of stupid monkeys at the helm, which is a rather condescending attitude. Condescension is a deflective mechanism, not unlike denial. A crisis brings along these psychological responses.
