This correlates with an analysis I read early in the pandemic. In fact they theorized many minor plagues of the last few centuries were coronavirus and that most common cold strains were descendants from these. But since it’s not the black death or small pox the historical record doesn’t put as much emphasis on them. They could trace a few strains to specific plagues because the molecular clock technique limited their search to the last 4 centuries.
