It's true for many projects, and I usually stop using them after it happens for the first time. Eventually, some software remains, against odds, stable. If not in the defaults, then after I apply my text-based, human-readable, source-matchable configuration files.

Also, I recently found Chicago 95 and am very pleased with the results of that five-minute shellscript :D
