I use the lamp stack too, hosting on scaleway nowadays; aws is great but for my own non critical hobbiest projects scaleway is hard to beat. Having said that, cpanel is great on shared hosting with the ability to specify your PHP version and modules.

As a language PHP can be a mess but the ecosystem is fantastic; the release of PSRs, composer and 7.x have been great.
