By coincidence, I'd been looking into the problem of bitrot and what options exist. Hard drives are a starting point and last longer than removable discs. If going for optical, M-DISC seems to be by far the best option.
I think there are still plenty of easy avenues to search for the man's (or team's) identity. It would only be appropriate to crowdfund a pool of bitcoins for a bounty on discovering Satoshi Nakamoto's identity.
I too once ran a bbs (614 area code). But the link between the bbs scene and today's Facebook is a bit tenuous, isn't it? Makes for an attractive headline though.
Each year a large number of people come to Detroit from around the world to photograph and then publish either articles or entire books on the "ruin porn" in Detroit. Some of these books sell for a pretty penny.
Downtown Detroit, where many of the pictures were taken, is actually much safer than the US on average. But people would rather live in a sprawling suburb.
