I haven't seen that one yet; I was mostly offline yesterday. This happens sometimes.
Btw, stories about "powerful tech people look like idiots" get discussed on HN all the time. The tenor of HN comments about that kind of thing leans strongly towards the cynical, enough that it's actually a problem for the long-term quality of the site. I may be misinterpreting you, but if you feel like HN needs more of that, I have to disagree.
Edit: $Firm hires $PolarizingPerson is probably not a good topic for HN but I'm happy to take a look at specific articles.
That is as pathetic as it gets. Regardless of how you feel about Daniel Penny’s role in the death of Jordan Neely, he is wholly unqualified for that job and it is the exact kind of virtue-signaling nonsense that a16z and others have been braying about non-stop.
It’s just so tiring and so gross. Like, what are we doing right now? What is happening here?
You are aware that most moral and ethical codes in a free society are enforced by people saying, "hey pal, that seems mighty improper," right? Don't be a crybaby.
"If you keep telling people it's bad to lie, I'm going to change my political views! *harumph*" is an impressive self-own.
No one is taking issue with your condescension or your tone. They're taking issue with your extremely bad ideas.
"Don't tell people not to lie or I'll become an extreme right winger" is a bad idea. It's a stupid thought. If you share that thought, you will be made fun of. But it's not because you shared it in a bad way. It's because it's a bad idea.
It absolutely is. Go look at the racial demographics of the neighborhoods where DMVs are being opened and closed. And then ask yourself which racial groups, at large, are more likely to have time in their day to sit at an inconveniently located DMV and what party they most often vote for.
As good as it gets!
