LLMs no good for you?

Not OP, but what game changing uses are you finding for LLMs? I mostly find they're good for brainstorming ideas of activities to do, asking "is there a thing like this and what is it called", and writing trite correspondence to acquaintances. It's useful for me but hardly life changing.

Putting it like that, and I like putting it like that, sounds like LLMs are to Wikipedia what shoes are to people who want to go from A to B.

That computers can reasonably handle natural language instructions is pretty amazing.

Sounds like... genetics?

What’s so fascinating is that Edinburgh and Glasgow are only 50 miles apart. Just 50 miles in where someone’s parents or even grandparents were born and moved then away from has a legitimate impact on their life expectancy.

Wow, TIL "balkanize" is a word. I love that!

This is awesome! I've been casually learning German for 200+ days now, so this will make a great addition to my practice. Are the short stories generated by LLMs too?

Nice to hear! I'm in the same position! Trying to keep it going and to find new ways to keep it interesting.

I'd also argue the disparity in compensation between private companies and government agencies pushes top engineering talent to the former.

Definitely. I think there is one exception though, which is advanced weapon manufacturers like Lockheed Martin. They're a private company, so they can compete on salary, but they're also a government contractor, building technology that could only be used by military. You won't see Google building stealth fighter jets, for example. So if an advanced physicist wants to work on cutting edge tech, they're more likely to end up at a place like that for their whole career. But even aerospace isn't immune from the private sector, as SpaceX has shown.

My thoughts exactly.

Cool read, mountain climbing has always amazed me. Zion is awesome too.

This is awesome.

Also interested!

Thank you! My process was: try to write it myself -> google it until it works -> ask ChatGPT how it can be better. I did this one component at a time, starting with the questions array, then answer buttons, timer logic, game over prompt, settings menu, etc.

I learned a hell of a lot more and a hell of a lot faster doing this project than I ever had in online courses/lessons/etc.
