The battery is comes out for recharging, so replacing a dead battery should be trivial

It's a proprietary form factor, so you're gambling on replacements being available down the line. I don't think it'll be easy to rebuild the battery pack without compromising the casing.

Given the battery specs and the form factor of the products, they could have used a 14500 cell that retails for $5. That's not as much recurring revenue as charging $80 for something proprietary though.

3d printer and couple of cells and I guess a board will get the job done.

You will have to print it from something like polyamide or polycarbonate, definitely not PLA

Or chuck it out as e-waste and buy the shiny new one

The dead battery is still e-waste and recycling isn't a magically neutral activity that brings back one new product out of an old one with no loss or energy spent.

I came across these guys working on commercializing it with a bit of a spin on the approach (generating the sound waves a slightly different way): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYUwME-dkC0

Has anyone tried to compile a list of software that uses these libraries? It would be great to know what apps to avoid

In the case of Android, εxodus has one[1], though I couldn't find the malware library listed in TFA. Aurora Store[2], a FOSS Google Play Store client, also integrates it.

That seems to be looking at tracking and data collection libraries, though, for things like advertising and crash reporting. I don't see any mention of the kind of 'network sharing' libraries that this article is about. Have I missed it?

No but here's the thing. Being in the industry for many years I know they are required to mention it in the TOS when using the SDKs. A crawler pulling app TOSs and parsing them could be a thing. List or not, it won't be too useful outside this tech community.

I wouldn't mind reading a comprehensive report on SOTA with regard to bot-blocking.

Sure, there's Anubis (although someone elsethread called it a half-measure, and I'd like to know why), there's captcha's, there's relying on a monopoly (cloudflare, etc) who probably also wants to run their own bots at some point, but what else is there?

A good portion of free VPN apps sell their traffic. This was the thing even before the AI bot explosion.

I've used Super Body Fuel on and off, and always been happy with the product. I haven't tried many others, so I can't really compare

My first 14 years of driving was always with a manual car, after that I've driven an auto most of the time and 99% of the time I do miss the manual. After a while, it became, almost, automatic and wasn't much of a hassle in traffic or anything.

That is a great explainer, simple and clear. Thanks for posting!

Yes, I think you are correct. I have never heard of a residential mortgage having a clause like that. It could definitely apply to store-fronts in NYC though

At the time of origination, residential mortgages will have limits on the equity-debt ratio. If you fall below a certain threshold (e.g. sub-20% downpayment) your lender may require you to carry private mortgage insurance (PMI). If your home's value were to fall substantially, your equity-debt ratio could be pushed below the threshold -- e.g. if tax assessments were updated.

I've never heard of situations that have re-triggered PMI... but it doesn't seem outside the realm of possibility.

This makes sense. Something similar has likely happened with some apartment landlords as COVID hit big cities. Rather than lowering rents and triggering a re-valuation, they let occupancy slide but could argue that potential rent was still the same. Both of these cases do require that the debt has the valuation terms in it, which not all do.
