I am currently an engineer at Meta. No one in my office is cross pollinating among different teams. In fact most of us are not even talking to each other unless there’s a dedicated meeting time for it. This whole thing about collaborating is better in person has never been my experience, because the collaboration (at least for engineering) is most of the time better done in a document.

There are, however, a few times when getting together and discussing something in person is valuable, but this is no more than maybe a couple times a month. I can definitely see this being different for other roles.

I worked at Meta nee Facebook from 2013-18, and back then there were no documents, and the only way to figure stuff out was either spelunk through the source code, or talk to people in person. So I was very surprised that they ever said they'd be doing remote, and entirely unsurprised that they are moving back towards the office.

That being said, there was no tracking of in office/remote days, it was just expected that you'd work from wherever worked best for you but (almost) everyone was based out of an office.

Obviously varies by culture. And while I've never worked for Meta, I've been at your Mountain View and New York campuses more times than I care to have been. Everything–including communal spaces–seems laid out for individual work. (This was true before the metamates nonsense, though that obviously accelerated it.)

There is no real skill needed for these big tech jobs. I think many people *over estimate* their “skills”.

Its definitely a joke. They were saying it again when the WhatsApp call failed. They were being sarcastic.

I’m surprised everyone is saying they weren’t sarcastic. They were even being MORE sarcastic about it being the Wi-Fi after the failed WhatsApp call.

I use an iPhone because Apple is more focused on privacy, and I don’t really need that many features on my phone.

> Apple is more focused on privacy

A more precise way to put it: Apple is focused on customer control, and will fight whoever tries to touch what they see as Apple's exclusive customers.

This has privacy benefits against tracking agents, reduces functionalities against third party services (Amazon, Spotify, Google, third party payment etc.), and forbids whole use cases (e.g. non Apple backup service).

As a customer one can be happy with the privacy windfall, but we've seen again and again that it's not Apple's focus per se.

This website has its own graph which looks different.

I have never gone to Indeed to apply for a job.

Any suggestions on where to read about this more?

That's the only site whose dev contents I ever paid for. Gary Bernhardt is very entertaining.

Mind linking the Yegge posts? I haven’t found the Amazon ones via google.

16 USD a month just to block ads seems ridiculous.

And it is inferior since it lacks sponsor block. I have premium that I use on my phone and it is pretty annoying that pretty much each video still has ads in them in the form of a sponsor segment

At some point I will probably cancel my subscription and use an unofficial app with sponsor block. And that aldo hopefully blocks shorts ad well

It's cheaper if you pay annually (129usd, afair). And YT Premium also includes access to YT Music, which is also ad-free. Plus the annual subscription doesn't auto-renew.

$130 usd a year for youtube. Wow. Thank you devs for ublock origin.

So there is no option to pay just to block all adds, just some bundle that blocks some ads
