Fyi it's not a missing resistor but a silicon defect in the Intel chip where a low-side mosfet on a clock line wears out after a certain number of boot cycles, causing the system to fail POST.
It is an easy fix (I had to do it too) but I agree Synology's poor support makes this the last of their products I'll use.
Virtual com ports or USB CDC do not require a baud rate as it's not a real serial port. As mentioned ESP32 has native USB and Arduino/ESP-IDF use USB CDC over this port to communicate with a host computer. Serial.begin() is used for all kinds of serial ports including virtual serial ports. Those libraries probably require a baudrate argument for Serial.begin() which will be ignored. This is probably in the documentation for that function.
If the same function is used on a physical serial port (of which there are a few on ESP32 iirc) the baudrate argument will be used to set the baudrate setting in the peripheral by the library.
The purpose of baud and other control settings for CDC devices is so that they can serve as a pass-through for a real UART that will need to know what those settings are. Those control packets can be ignored if that never happens.
The author is working out his personal demons through planning actualization. I hope it works out for him and I would be interested in a followup. In my own experience the best laid plans remain just that..... life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans.
Did not expect chez cora to make the front page of HN.
I agree - and if the article is correct and Apple and Amazon are the losers, I fail to glean who the winners will be or how their business model will be different.
It will take much longer than that, you have to prep the airplane, do planning, refuel and inspect, pee, eat, and everything depends on the weather, is it too hot, too windy, poor visibility, what is the expected weather enroute and at the destination 4 hours from now, are there route restrictions. Still worth it usually.

It is not, like the THz band, which is why it’s very interesting for telecommunications. There is more bandwidth available in a tinier part of the spectrum. It’s like comparing the ipv4 address space to the ipv6 address space. And no license required.
