Hey, any chance your hardware developer friend could spare a few minutes to talk about his/her work? I'm a freelance hardware+software developer and there's not many of us out there it seems. It would be great to get some feedback on some long-term business goals. You can reach me at contact5m4t@peakdata.io
Thanks!
I'd suggest the HP-16c programmer's calculator. It was small, programmable, and did calculations and conversions in hex, octal, decimal, and binary. At the time I bought one, the early 80's, I was doing embedded programming in assembler the thing was a life saver. And what's cool is that I still have it and it still works.
I've recently started using Syncthing to synchronize files between different machines. I'm super impressed at the quality of the application, its stability, and the documentation. Syncthing is written in go and open source. https://syncthing.net/
This article was linked on HN last fall I believe: http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2015/11/airplane-maintenance-...
Basically the airlines are outsourcing maintenance to places like El Salvador, Mexico, and China. The FAA has very little capacity for providing the same level of oversight previously conducted in US-based maintenance facilities. Scary.
Yikes. Horrifying stuff. If you've ever read the book "Poorly Made in China" it's kind of frightening to imagine the same techniques being applied to airplane maintenance.
The Mises Institute, founded in 1982, teaches the scholarship of Austrian economics, freedom, and peace. The liberal intellectual tradition of Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973) and Murray N. Rothbard (1926-1995) guides us. Accordingly, we seek a profound and radical shift in the intellectual climate: away from statism and toward a private property order. We encourage critical historical research, and stand against political correctness. The institute serves students, academics, business leaders, and anyone seeking better understanding of the Austrian school of economics and libertarian political theory.

Embedded systems programmer here. I'm learning Elixir and am very excited about the nerves project:

Edit: There also seems to be a good Elixir/Erlang community here in Berlin Germany where I live at the moment.
Do you have some link or contacts in/to this community? I am in process to develop a quite interesting application on Erlang and I am struggling to find a community (in Germany) where I can either ask questions or have a pool of possible people to hire.
I've been a print subscriber since May 2011 and I just wanted to say that my monthly issue of Hacker Monthly has consistently been a wonderful experience. The articles, the art, everything was very enjoyable. Thanks so much for having offered this service!
